About Us
DECA is a global organization that encourages and focuses on the development on business and leadership skills for students through business competitions and conferences. Through the program, each and every student gets the opportunity to learn about marketing, entrepreneurship, public speaking, management, and other essential skills.
IRHS DECA is a chapter of DECA that competes with other high schools from around Ontario. Our mission is to prepare our members by curating curriculum's, resources and creating in depth lessons to pass on the information we have learned over time. |
Competition
DECA promotes hard work and dedication through various competitive events that involve a 100 question multiple choice exam which tests students knowledge of business concepts, and a 10-15 minute live case study where students assume the role of a business executive and present a plan to a judge. Students then receive a score out of 200 (half exam, half case study). While the exam is easily assessed, case studies are judged on a students ability to develop and communicate creative and effective solutions to the problem situations. If students perform well, they can go on to win awards, praise, and qualification for further levels of competition.

Clusters, Preperation and Levels of Competition
At the core of DECA are main “clusters” of events, where students can develop certain aspects of their business knowledge. These include Marketing, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, Business Administration, and Entrepreneurship. At the start of the DECA year, students get to choose which event, and which cluster they would like to partake in. From there, they are taught business concepts by cluster leaders, and how to successfully apply those to the DECA competition. In November, students compete in a regional competition, where if they perform well, they qualify for the Ontario Provincials, which are held over 3 days in downtown Toronto. If students excel further, they may qualify for the prestigious International Career Development Conference or ICDC, an international DECA competition/conference held over a week in Anaheim, California.

Lifelong Benefits
DECA is a network of like minded individuals which allows students to develop skills, meet new friends, learn from industry workers, form connections, and have fun. Universities look favorably on DECA as an organization and student extracurricular, and many Ontario universities provide scholarships for DECA alumni's. At IRHS, DECA is the largest student club/organization with about 200 chapter members every year, and we look forward to what next year has to bring for the club, even with the ongoing pandemic. If you have any questions, contact any of the executives on the other page.
